Jupiter and Saturn

Jupiter

Jupiter, Ganymede and Io 21/03/03

LX200 f10 and Philip's ToUCam. This animation starts at 20:36:44 and ends 20:54:46UTC. During this period Io comes out of eclipse (20:48) and a shadow transit of Ganymede ends (20:51). The animation comprises stacks of 50 frames assembled in Registax. Each group of 50 covers about 34 seconds.

An animation of a rare mutual event of Jupiter's satellites. Just before Europa slips behind Jupiter it disappears as it is eclipsed by Io (right). The eclipse is partial at 56% but the camera gain was set not to over expose Jupiter so it loses Europa at this point. Note the yellow-orange colour of Io can be seen. LX200 and Philips ToUCam at f10.  Jupiter taken with the LX200 at f20 using a Philips ToUCam Pro webcam. The seeing was generally good.

Saturn

This image is by the far the best I have taken of Saturn. It is a stack of about 250 frames taken with the LX200 at f20 and a Philips ToUCam Pro. The image was processed using Registax.
This series of images of Saturn were taken between November 1996 and January 2001. They show how the rings have gradually tilted more towards Earth in this period.  Above, still sharp but not as good as the February image

8 months later the rings have begun to close

Above Saturn again at f20. The rings have now closed so that the disc just extends beyond their edge
Saturn 0n 19/03/05 at around 21:00. This image was taken at f20 and enlarged x2 during processing with Registax
Saturn 0n 25/03/05 at around 21:00.
